Chapter 16

Roessler has a sharp eye for business and no sooner do I take up my rightful role as muse to a great artist than he asks for whatever pictures Egon can do of me. My life has started with Egon in Krumau and we’re very busy.

We establish a relaxed routine. We work – I model; Egon draws – and then I recover from modelling curled up in the corner of his studio while Egon reads ‘Illuminations’ – a slim volume of poetry by some dead French poet. I watch Egon making notes, captivated by the beauty of his hands – they get me every time – against the deep red of the book cover. His stocking feet, crossed at the ankles, tap up and down rhythmically and make me long to hear the sounds of the words in his head. Then he drops his right arm to his side, sits back in his chair and flings his floppy hair back.

I marvel at his youthful beauty and imagine a future for us together, here in Krumau, the town on a hill, where we are magically elevated above the hypocritical confines of the city. Here there is only me – Egon – Art: a holy, artistic trinity.

I promised I would write.
